The Most Dangerous Highways in FL?

Florida is known for lots of things, including plenty of sunshine, delicious oranges, and the beloved Magic Kingdom. Unfortunately, it’s also known for its maze of dangerous highways. If another motorist’s negligence leaves you injured in a car accident, don’t delay consulting with an experienced Boynton Beach personal injury lawyer.

Considering Dangerous Roadways

Teletrac Navman compiled data gathered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA’s) Fatal Accident Reporting System (FARS) to pinpoint the 25 most dangerous highways in the United States, and Florida is something of a hotspot. In fact, only Texas, which is nearly five times larger than Florida, has more of the top 25 running through its state. Let’s take a closer look.

Interstate 4

I-4, which runs from Tampa to Daytona Beach, tops the list of dangerous highways with 1.250 traffic fatalities on average per mile of highway. The deadliest city on I-4 is Orlando, and from 2011 through 2015, there were a total of 165 fatalities on this stretch of 132 miles. The most common accidents on I-4 include accidents involving two-car crashes, rollovers, and pedestrian accidents.

Highway 192

Highway 192 flows for 75 miles – from Four Corners, Florida, through Melbourne, and on to Indialantic, Florida. This stretch of Highway sees 0.867 fatalities per mile on average, and the deadliest spot on it is Melbourne. The most common accidents seen on Highway 192 (in order) include:

  • Pedestrian accidents
  • Two-car accidents
  • Rollovers

From 2011 to 2015, there were 65 fatalities on this highway, which has the distinction of being the third most dangerous in the nation.

Interstate 95

Interstate 95 has earned its dangerous reputation, and it is the fifth most dangerous on this list. I-95 begins in Miami, moves through Jacksonville, which is the deadliest city on the highway’s 1,920-mile route, and terminates in Weston, Massachusetts. The average number of fatalities per mile is 0.730, and the most common accidents are two-car accidents and rollovers. In the five years from 2011 to 2015, there were 1,402 traffic fatalities.

Interstate 10

Interstate 10 is a whopper at 2,460 miles, and it begins in Santa Monica, California, and ends in Jacksonville, Florida. The average number of fatalities per mile is 0.703, and the deadliest city on its path is Houston, Texas. In the years between 2011 and 2015, there were 1,703 traffic deaths (the largest number by far of any of these top 25). The most common accidents that lead to death on I-10 are two-car accidents, rollovers, and pedestrian accidents. I-10 ranks as the sixth most dangerous highway in the nation.
